It’s summer, the perfect season for enjoying a great new read on the beach, by the pool, or in the shade, and we’ve been waiting for this moment because we just launched our first major book club, a partnership with Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss’ Belletrist. We have a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and business leadership books already on the platform, with more great titles on the way, which means you’re bound to find something you really love. Here are some of our current favorites, just in time for a summer day spent at the pool.
You may have already heard of Brotopia, the expose on toxic culture within Silicon Valley, but on BookClub, author Emily Chang takes it to a whole new level by sharing why she started writing Brotopia, what she learned while writing it, and how far we still have to go. BookClub team member Blair Fairman said, “I love the vulnerability that was beautifully portrayed in Brotopia. Power plus money is the perfect recipe for corruption and Silicon Valley is not immune to that. In his debut novel, Simon Han tells the story of an immigrant family living in Plano, Texas, and how family secrets can change everything. Nights When Nothing Happened highlights the immigrant experience in a whole new way, and on BookClub you can hear Simon discuss how his own childhood influenced the story and what it took to bring the novel together. BookClub team member Michael Moulton said that Nights When Nothing Happened “was a haunting portrayal of the suburbs that shows how unnatural of an environment such a mundane place can be.” If Simon’s novel intrigues you, be sure to watch the trailer and join BookClub.
Maaza Mengiste’s The Shadow King is an in-depth look at how women do what it takes to protect themselves, and their people, during times of war. On BookClub Maaza discusses the true history of the Ethiopian and Italian war, why telling the story of these women was so important, and what the nine-year writing journey was like. BookClub team member Sarah Mori particularly liked The Shadow King due to its portrayal of women’s strength, and the conversation the book had around how women contributed to World War II (even if their contribution was often left out of the historical record). If you’re a true crime junkie, Kevin Salwen’s The Suspect is the perfect read for you. The Suspect follows the bombing at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and highlights how quickly someone can become a suspect, especially when the media is playing a role in deciding their guilt or innocence. On BookClub Kevin discusses what it was like to see the case play out in the media, why he knew telling Richard Jewell’s story was important, and how he and his writing partner put the book together. BookClub team member Melissa Boles found The Suspect both engaging and timely, given the upcoming Summer Olympics, and thinks any true crime fan will find it a must-read. Not only did the BookClub team love this book, but Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss did too, which is why it’s Belletrist’s July pick and the first book that’s part of the new Belletrist + BookClub partnership. Lisa Taddeo’s first novel is an emotional, enthralling look at how trauma, rage, and female sexuality can change someone’s life in an instant. BookClub team member Edith Freni said, “I loved Animal because it made me feel simultaneously uncomfortable, enraged, and utterly seen.
